How to Brief a Store Opening Shoot

Launch-day photography goes wrong in the brief more often than on the day. After 1000+ retail projects since 2015, these are the things we ask every brand and agency to settle before the crew arrives, so the opening is covered once, and covered properly.

  • Access windows: a pre-opening slot for the clean, empty store, and a trading-hours slot for people in frame
  • A shot list by area: façade and windows, interiors, VM and product detail, staff and VIP moments
  • Who signs off on the day, and who receives the same-day selects for press and social
  • Embargo times, so press-ready selects land before they are needed
  • Formats: stills only, or stills plus video, Matterport 3D and 9:16 social cuts from the same visit
  • What must be retouched: reflections, signage, competing branding, anything the fit-out left behind

— Frequently asked

How to Brief a Store Opening Shoot — questions.

What shots does store opening photography need?

Exterior and façade, windows and vitrines, wide interiors, visual merchandising and product detail, and the people moments: staff, VIPs and the first customers through the door. Most brands need both an empty pre-opening set and a trading-hours set.

How far ahead should a store opening shoot be booked?

As soon as the date is fixed, because access slots are the hardest thing to move. Late briefs are normal in retail, though, and we regularly mobilise within 24 to 48 hours.

Should photo and video be shot together at an opening?

Usually, yes. One coordinated crew means one access slot, one look across stills and film, and a smaller footprint in a store that is busy on launch day.

When is the best time to photograph a new store?

Before opening for the space itself, clean and empty, with the lighting scheme as designed. During trading hours for energy and people. Windows often read best at dusk, when the light inside balances the street.
